On Daybreak we're launching YOU CAN HELP. It's your chance to do something simple to help others this Christmas.

More than 13 million people live below the poverty line in the UK. This includes one in three children. Families across the country are struggling to put meals on their tables.

The Salvation Army has revealed that the number of food parcels being given out from their food centres have doubled in two years.

You can help

We want to collect as many cans of food as possible, to help as many people as possible. We're asking everyone to donate cans of food at participating Co-operative Food stores. The Salvation Army will distribute donated cans which will help people in your community.

Why not tweet us a picture to @daybreak as you donate using #youcanhelp?  There are nearly 1,000 Co-op food stores taking part across the UK.

Find your participating Co-op store and get involved today

You can donate a can from Monday 26th November until Sunday 2nd December 2012.

Our You Can Help appeal has now closed

We raised a massive 110,000 cans in one week across the country which will help around 3,000 families this Christmas and beyond.  However, if you would still like to donate cans for those in need this Christmas, please check with your local Salvation Army Centre first, details of your nearest Corps can be found here: www.salvationarmy.org.uk.

Some are happy to accept cans, while others may not due to this being such a busy time for them, so please contact your nearest centre directly.

Alternatively, the Trussell Trust runs the UK foodbank network which gives emergency food to thousands of men, women and children nationwide.  To find your nearest foodbank to help, please go to: www.trusselltrust.org/foodbank-projects
