£100s cashback on Christmas spends, £20 family railcard, shopping discount codes, free Sprite, and more. These are Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis’ Deals of the Week.
Remember, deals can change quickly, even while I’m on the programme. So always double-check the terms and conditions before spending. Plus, while I hope these deals will save you cash, don’t spend if you can’t afford it, don’t need it, or won’t use it.
Web Exclusive: 7x 10ml nail polishes £22 (RRP £77)
From 5pm today (Thursday 17 October), search for "lucky dip" on the Nails Inc website to get seven full-size polishes for £18, plus £3.95 delivery.
One polish alone usually costs £11, but as it's a lucky dip, you won't know what colours you'll get.
The perfect time to grab a cashback card
Cashback credit cards pay you when you spend on them. So provided you set up a direct debit to repay them in full (let me repeat that for emphasis – IN FULL every month) you don’t pay interest, so you’re quids in. And now is the perfect time as the top payer the Amex Platinum Everyday card gives accepted new customers (needs a decent credit score and minimum household income of £20,000) a huge 5% cashback for the first three months.
That means apply right now and you get the maximum cashback during most people’s highest spend times of the year – Christmas and the January sales. After the 5% ends, the rate drops to up to 1.25%, depending on how much you spend. Once you’ve got the card, use it for all your usual spending. Do ensure you repay in full or it’s 19.9% representative APR.
If you’ve a poor credit history, there’s the Capital One Classic Extra, which pays 0.5% cashback, plus a £10 yearly bonus if you manage it well. It's designed as a credit rebuild card, so even some with past CCJs/defaults can get it. But it’s crucial you repay in full each month, or it's a scary 34.9% APR.
However, the credit limit on this card is £200-£1,500, which is relatively low for a cashback card. So if you’re at the bottom end of that, you might not be able to do all your Christmas shopping on it.
Always obey the cashback card golden rules: a) Always use a monthly direct debit to repay IN FULL so it's interest-free. b) Don’t see it as an excuse to overspend c) Ensure you've cash to cover your monthly spending d) Don’t make cash withdrawals or balance transfers on the card – they don’t earn you cashback and can result in you paying interest even if you clear in full.
£20 family railcard (RRP £30)
The Family & Friends Railcard is a brilliant buy for almost every family, even if you don’t use the train that often. It saves you 1/3 on up to four adults (aged 16 and over) and a massive 60% off up to four children (aged 5-15) - as long as at least one of the two named adults you choose and one child are travelling together (you don't even need to be related).
What’s more, until 11.59pm on Friday 1 November, grab the code from the Family & Friends Railcard website and get it for £20 (usually £30).
Just one decent-length rail trip a year can save you more than the £20 cost. For example, I found an advance single trip for two adults and two children from Brum to Manchester was £45, but with a railcard the same trip was £23.
Martin’s quick deals
Free 500ml bottle of Sprite. Just fill in your details on this Sprite Facebook page by 11.59pm on Friday 25 October to get a voucher for a free 500ml bottle (or 330ml can if bottles aren’t available). It’s participating Subways only (so be prepared that it may not be accepted) and you must use it by Thursday 31 October (you don't have to buy anything). Sadly, it’s not valid in Northern Ireland or on Sprite Zero.
H&M 25% off. Buy a copy of this week's Grazia magazine (£1) and get a 25% off voucher to use in-store at H&M until Tuesday 22 October. There are some exclusions, so check the voucher.
£20 of movie streaming for £10. Blinkbox is a pay-per-view movie service with no monthly subscription, so it’s great for light movie watchers. You can rent recent releases like Iron Man 3 and Oblivion for £3.49. But until Sunday 20 October, £5, £10 and £20 Blinkbox gift cards are scanning at half price at some Tesco stores (follow the link and select ‘Gift Card store’ from the drop-down list to see participating stores) meaning you can get half-price movie streaming.
