Peggy is David's aunt. When David's previous companion, Vernon Scripps "died", Peggy arrived from Ilkley to look after him. That involved moving into David's house and not paying any rent.
Though Peggy came to Aidensfield to exploit David, to her surprise she discovered that she needed him as much as he clearly needed her. And, as much as Peggy loves anyone now, she loves David.
Peggy is a widow, who had been married for nearly 40 years to Bert, a former dustbin man. She has had many dubious enterprises but usually falls back on poaching.
Peggy is unscrupulous, devious, opportunistic and belligerent; she is almost feral.
Miller, Blaketon and Rosie dislike her; Gina and Bernie only just tolerate her. But she is quick-thinking and resourceful, clever and inventive; she has an abrasive honesty, and little vanity.
In a jam, she's usually a good person to have on your side.
