Diane is a no-nonsense, firm but fair, respected member of the community. As Woolpack landlady she looks after her staff and often acts as a sounding board to the punters. Diane has been unlucky in love and has had difficult marriages. However she's honest, loyal and puts up with a lot of nonsense from sister Val. Her nature is to get on with life and pick herself up when things are down.

- Diane arrives in Emmerdale village to visit her daughter Bernice

- Diane has her first kiss with Jack

- After Jack's funeral Diane is proud when Andy plans to keep the farm running for Jack's sake; she see’s Jack as she walks away. The extended Sugden family is united in their grief
- Diane is heartbroken when Andy has to give up the farm due to his illness
2010
- Whisked away to Paris by Charlie
- Decides to sell the Woolpack to go and live in France with Charlie
- Realises too late that Charlie was a conman and has taken all her money
- Doug loans Diane enough money to stay afloat while she sorts out her finances
2011
- When Diane can't find a buyer for the Woolpack, she agrees to a joint business partnership with Chas
2012
- Val breaks the news to Eric and Amy that Val isn't coming back
