PlayThe Academy Awards will not be honouring the gritty Italian crime drama Gomorrah this year, after the European Film award winner was left off the nine-strong list for the Oscars next month.
Matteo Garrone's adaptation of the blockbuster book from Roberto Saviano was expected to take its place alongside Golden Globes champ Waltz With Bashir and Cannes' Palme D'Or victor The Class from Laurent Cantet.
However, it was a notable absentee when the list was announced for the Best Foreign Language Film with stunning Israeli animation Bashir vying with the likes of the French docudrama.
The nine films will now be cut down to five in time for the nominations announcement on January 22, along with the other categories.
Other films in the running include Germany's "The Baader Meinhof Complex", Japan's "Departures", Jan Troell's "Everlasting Moments" from Sweden, Roberto Sneider's Mexican "Tear This Heart Out", Austria's "Revanche," Canada's "The Necessities of Life" and Turkey's "3 Monkeys."
The actual ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on February 22 with Australia star Hugh Jackman hosting the big showbiz night of the year.
