A type of legume, chickpeas are have been grown for thousands of years and are native to the Middle East. They are a great source of protein and also fibre, which makes them a healthy carb option. Chickpeas have also recently been proven to lower cholesterol, so are really very good for you! They can be bought either tinned or dried, the latter needing to be soaked overnight before cooking.
Chickpeas are a great store cupboard ingredient, meaning that it's good to keep them on hand to throw into various types of dishes. Chickpeas taste great when blended and mixed with tahine paste for hummus, thrown into curries or even added to a simple fresh salad.
