Nanny Pat from The Only Way Is Essex loves to make this sausage plait - here is Phil Vickery's version of the meaty treat.
Ingredients
- 500 g17¾ oz puff pastry
- 25 g1 oz butter
- 1 small onion, diced
- 500 g17¾ oz sausage meat
- 1 egg, beaten
Method: How to make Nanny Pat's sausage plait
Preheat the oven to 170°C/gas 3 then roll the pastry out into a 30cm square
Melt the butter in the frying pan, add the onion and cookgently for 5-10 minutes until it has softened. Leave to cool.
Place the sausagemeat down the centre third of the rolled-out pastry, leaving an empty border of about 4cm at the top and bottom.
Place the cooked onions evenly on top of the sausagemeat
Cut slits in the pastry from about 3cm away from the sausage mixture to the edges.
Fold the top and bottom borders of pastry over the sausagemeat, then take pastry strips from alternate sides and place over the sausagemeat to make a plait. Tuck any extra strips underneath. Brush the top with beaten egg.
Transfer to a baking tray and bake in the centre of the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
