Simple and tasty soda bread cooked by Dick and James Strawbridge on The Hungry Sailors.
Ingredients
- 500 g17¾ oz plain flour
- 1 heaped tbsp wheat flakes
- 1 heaped tbsp wheat germ
- 1 heaped tbsp wheat bran
- 1 heaped tbsp oat bran
- 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 300 ml10½ fl oz buttermilk
Method: How to make Soda bread
Sift the salt, bicarbonate of soda and flour into a bowl. Mix well.
Tip in the wheat flakes, wheat germ, wheat and oat bran.
Make a well in the centre and pour in half of the buttermilk. Using your hands, bring the mixture together.
Depending on the consistency, add the remaining buttermilk a little at a time until the dough has formed a ball and the bowl is clean.
Lightly dust the work surface with flour. Split the dough in half and roll into two balls.
Slightly flatten into a disc shape, score a cross into the top of the dough and bake at 200C for 20 minutes.
