Stephen Lawrence’s dad: I forgive my son’s killers
I feel like I’ve let go a burden that I was carrying around for so many years.
Almost 25 years since his son’s murder, Dr Neville Lawrence told today’s Good Morning Britain he forgives his son’s killers and can only just remember their names.
Stephen Lawrence was 18 years old when he was stabbed to death at a bus stop in Eltham, south east London back in 1993. The murder caused outrage across the country and lead to the exposure of institutional racism in the Metropolitan Police Service.
Speaking to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, he said: “We campaigned for justice for so many years - the pressure and the burden that I was carrying about the way I felt about these people, was making me ill in a sense."
I would like the investigation to be scaled down, not shut down.
Despite forgiving his son's murderers, Neville said he wants "total justice" and wants the police investigations to continue.
He said: “I feel that these people done something wrong and they should pay for it. We’ve had some justice. I would like total justice. I would like it to be scaled down, not shut down.”
