Story:

Four years ago Trisha’s life changed forever as she was given the devastating news that she had breast cancer.  She almost immediately knew that if she was to try and beat this illness she would have to fight back. Her way of doing this was to do her bit to help reduce the chances of other people having to face the same situation and so the Chyrelle Addams Breast Cancer Trust was born. As a professional entertainer she knew that she could raise a lot of money and contribute in a large way to this cause and has raised an astonishing £80,000 so far by organising sponsored walks, raffles and entertainment evenings, despite living with this illness which at times made her exhausted and sick.

The Chyrelle Addams Breast Cancer Trust raises awareness and funds in support of those living with cancer. The charity has also opened a support centre to help cancer sufferers and their families.

Charity details:         http://www.horseback.org.uk/

Story:

Jock Hutchison joined the Royal Marines Commandos in 1986 inspired by his father who had served in the corp in the early fifties.  During his time in service Jock served as an officer and as a troop commander before being accepted as a military pilot.  He flew with the Army and Navy as well as the Royal Marines and saw active service around the world. Jock finally made the decision to leave the service and return to a normal family life with his wife and three children. As Jock began to adapt to every day life he began to have doubts about his decision as he increasingly experienced feelings of worthlessness. Jock recognised that there was a definite need to help soldiers on their return from active service or those who had already left. Having recently moved to a farm, Jock felt strongly about creating a safe and secure environment for those who have served in the UK forces and hence HorseBack UK was formed.

HorseBack UK helps war veterans in a farm environment by providing support as well as life and employment skills to assist them with reintegration back into civilian life. It assists those suffering from mental health problems and physical injuries through equine therapy.

Quiz player: Ian Wren, a Metre Operator for an energy company from Arbroath, Scotland

Ian has been an unpaid volunteer for Horseback for 2 years and is now good friends with Jock. Having served in the army himself he knows how important a charity like Horseback is and has seen first hand the difference Horseback makes to people’s lives.

Hero:                                     Linda James

Age:                                       51

From:                                    Cardiff

Charity:                                 BulliesOut

Charity details:                   http://www.bulliesout.com/

Story:

Linda James was inspired to set up a charity by her own harrowing experience of being bullied. Linda’s experiences were made all the more worse when she realised her youngest son, aged 10 at the time, was also suffering from bullying, making him withdrawn from school. When her son asked if there was an online support facility, Linda looked for it. Finding nothing available, she was inspired to set up BulliesOut and ran it from her home for two years before moving to an office space.

BulliesOut provides support and information to individuals, schools, young people and communities affected by bullying. Their online mentoring initiative enables children and young people to talk to a trained mentor to gain help and support. They also run several different workshops and training sessions which are for parents, schools and children, raising awareness about the issue and educating on the effects it has. They currently reach up to 15,000 children a year.

Quiz player: Marina Lois, a Wedding Planner from Cardiff

Marina became an unpaid Trustee with the charity earlier this year and has since become a good friend of Linda’s who she thinks is an absolute inspiration. Marina was bullied at school so knows how vital a charity like this is in helping bullied children.
