This Morning - Bollywood guide

Some notable recent Bollywood films which have been a success include:

Om Shanti Om (2007): This stars Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. More than forty two well-known Bollywood stars appear in the course of the film, including thirty of them (not including the stars of the film) in one song alone. It tells the story of a 'junior artist' (background actor) who longs to be a 'hero' in Bollywood films.  It has won many awards including best Asian Film, best composer and best lyrics at different ceremonies.

Devdas (2002):  This film has been made three times, but this is the first version where it is in colour. The film is about a man (Devdas), who's wealthy family prohibits him from marrying the woman he is in love with. His life spirals further and further out of control as he takes up alcohol and a life of vice to numb the pain.  This was nominated for a BAFTA for best film not in the
English language, and won countless other awards in India.

Lage Raho munnabhai (2006): This is a Comedy Drama film about an underworld gangster known as Munna Bhai, who falls comically in love with a radio host by the name of Jahnvi, who runs an old peoples home, which is taken over by an unscrupulous builder.  This took Bollywood by storm in 2006, and won many awards, including critics choice, most popular film, best actor and best story.
