Calum has finally made public the huge impact his father's drinking had on him.
In a hard-hitting documentary for Children in Need, Calum Best (28) opens up about how his childhood was shaped by his father's addiction.
Calum thought long and hard before agreeing to make this documentary. He says: "I have to admit I had reservations about making public what I had kept private for so long. I didn't want anyone to think I was discrediting my father's memory or being disrespectful in any way.
"I finally decided to do the programme for two reasons. Firstly because I wanted to help other children of alcoholic parents who may be suffering as I did, and secondly because I thought it might give me some sort of personal closure."
Meeting other children who have grown up in the shadow of a parent's alcohol addiction, Calum seeks to bring to light the lack of support made available to the children of alcoholics - the often forgotten victims of this widespread addiction.
While making the documentary, Calum visited a project supported by Children in Need which gives children a safe space to express their feelings about living with an alcoholic parent, and provides them with the support and help they need to cope.
Calum says: "There needs to be more places like this which support the families of the addict, those forgotten victims of addiction. I know the addict themselves needs support, and it is right that they should get it. But if these kids don't have an outlet, they will turn on themselves and the destructive cycle will never be broken."
