Sara Payne - Victims’ Champion

Sara Payne and victim of crime Asher Nardone talk about changes for justice.

Sara Payne was appointed Victims’ Champion by the government in January. She has spent the last nine months looking at the Criminal Justice System and how victims of crime are treated.

Today she releases her first report ‘Redefining Justice’ looking into how frontline services meet the needs of victims and witnesses. From this report Sara will make 14 recommendations to the Government.

Sara says victims and witnesses deserve better from the justice system and that the Criminal Justice System should act according to the victims need and the impact of the crime rather then the type of offence.

Sara's daughter Sarah, 8, was murdered in 2000 by repeat offender Roy Whiting. He was jailed for life in December 2001 and was later told he must serve a minimum of 50 years.

A total of 14 pieces of legislation tightening the laws on child sex offenders have been introduced as a direct result of Sara’s work.

Asher Nardone and her sons Callum, 13, who has cerebral palsy, and Garin, 11, have been victims of a campaign of harassment and intimidation on the Dorset estate in which they live for three years.

Over the space of nine months the windows of her house and car were smashed, gloss paint was poured over her car and Asher was verbally abused.

Asher says Sara's recommendations make real sense. She says what's also needed is more support for victims. Asher says that she would like to see victims gain more access to what is happening with their cases.
