The glorious Bill Nighy

Bill joins Holly and Phil to talk about Glorious 39, and appearing in a top secret film!

From failed rocker in Love Actually, to squid-faced Davey Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean, Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning Bill Nighy proudly flies the British flag on both sides of the Atlantic.

His latest film Glorious 39 is a British thriller set in London and the Norfolk countryside when Britain stands on the brink of war. The story is centred around the Keyes family – headed by Bill’s character, influential Conservative MP Alexander, who are determined to preserve their very traditional, English way of life in the midst of this political uncertainty.

Bill says: "My character fought in the First World War. You have to remember that that war was only 18 years prior to this, and people feared the German air force rather as we might today fear nuclear annihilation."

Bill is the voice of Dr. Elefun in the new animated adventure, Astro Boy, a film about a young robot created by a scientist in the image of the son he lost. Astro Boy has been a Japanese cartoon since 1963, which made Bill like the idea of taking part even more: "He doesn't know he's a robot and I love the idea he doesn't know what superpowers he's got and he only discovers them when he's required."

With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows due for release in November 2010, Bill has joked about the extra-tight security the film. He plays the role of Minister for Magic Rufus Scrimgeour in the film, and said he had to shred his scripts to be on the safe side. "They kill you if you leave your script lying around.” Bill revealed that he had a great time: " I thought I was going to be the only British actor of a certain age not to be in Harry Potter and it turned out not to be true so it's kind of cool."

Bill says that he still has difficulty believing he has become so successful in acting. "I hold my breath and hope that it doesn't stop any time soon.”
