Ferries of the Future

The biggest and most advanced ferries the south has ever seen have gone on show for the very first time. Two are being built at a cost of hundreds of millions of pounds and are set to revolutionise the way we cross the Channel - And secure hundreds of jobs.

The existing ships sail in at around 26,000 tones. The super-ferry is almost double that at 49,000 tonnes. The number of cars they will be able to carry is more than a thousand. That's nearly twice the number carried today.

And they are around 50 metres longer than the ones crossing the Channel at the moment. They are replacing ships built in the 1980's at a cost of £4 million. Today's price tag - a staggering £150 million.
