Austrian police had originally put the death toll at up to 50 but the interior ministry confirmed today that the number of bodies identified had risen by a further 20.

An Austrian motorway patrol spotted the abandoned refrigerated truck near the Hungarian border around lunchtime yesterday and reports emerged that fluids from the decomposing bodies inside were seeping from its back door.

Police spokesman Helmut Marban said work continued throughout the night to establish the death toll and confirmed forensic investigators were still trying to "establish all the facts" surrounding the discovery of the lorry.

US campus shooting witness 'saw moment fight broke out'

A witness to a shooting on a US university has described the moment a fight broke out on campus - and someone pulled a gun.

Ashia Gordon, a student at Savannah State University, tried to help the victim before he was taken to hospital, she said.

She said she had been eating when a fight broke out "out of nowhere", and then someone pulled out a gun and shot the victim.

The group he was with then left him on his own, she added, as she described how she tried to help by getting people to take their shirts off and put pressure on the wound.
