Government completes privatisation of Royal Mail

The government has sold the remainder of its stake in Royal Mail for £591 million, ending its financial interest in the 500-year-old postal operator.

A total of 13% was sold at 455p per share, while the Treasury plans to give the final 1% shareholding to Royal Mail's eligible UK staff.

The privatisation in 2013 attracted criticism from opposition politicians and trade unions who said the firm had been sold off too cheaply.

Beer giants SABMiller and Anheuser-Busch InBev have "agreed in principle" on a £68 billion tie-up to create the world's biggest drinks firm.

SABMiller, which makes Peroni and Grolsch, is set to be taken over after tentatively reaching a deal over an improved offer of £44 a share from its Belgium-based rival InBev - the brewer of Budweiser - in what marks the largest takeover of a British firm in corporate history.

AB InBev and SABMiller still have to agree the terms of a formal offer, but have extended the deadline to make a firm bid under City takeover rules to October 28.

More cloud is expected across central and eastern parts of the UK though, with some showers.

It will feel chilly for mid-October in the brisk northeasterly wind, particularly across southeast England with temperatures only reaching highs of 14C.


New law to ban renting houses to illegal immigrants

MPs are set to debate a new Bill which would make it illegal to rent property to illegal immigrants.

If it goes through, the Immigration Bill will crack down on landlords and letting agents who let properties to migrants who do not have a valid immigration status.

It will also give landlords new powers to evict tenants who do not have a 'right to rent'.

An offence will be committed if:

  • Landlords rent properties to migrants who do not have valid immigration status
  • If a tenant continues to occupy a property if their right to remain has changed and the landlord is aware of this
  • If a letting agent carries out 'right to rent' checks and fails to tell the landlord they will be entering into an agreement with someone disqualified due to their immigration status
  • If agents are aware but do not inform a landlord that their tenant's leave to remain in the UK has expired and they remain in their property
