Lord Sewel's House of Lords resignation letter in full

In a letter to parliamentary officials, Lord Sewel has resigned from the House of Lords following allegations he took drugs with prostitutes.

I have today written to the Clerk of the Parliaments terminating my membership of the House of Lords.

The question of whether my behaviour breached the Code of Conduct is important, but essentially technical.

The bigger questions are whether my behaviour is compatible with membership of the House of Lords and whether my continued membership would damage and undermine public confidence in the House of Lords.

I believe the answer to both these questions means that I can best serve the House by leaving it.

As a subordinate, second chamber the House of Lords is an effective, vital but undervalued part of our political system.

I hope my decision will limit and help repair the damage I have done to an institution I hold dear. Finally, I want to apologise for the pain and embarrassment I have caused.

Lord Sewel is to quit the House of Lords following after newspaper footage emerged over the weekend of him allegedly taking drugs with prostitutes.

ITV News' Deputy Political Editor Chris Ship tweeted Sewel had written a letter to the Clerk of Parliaments terminating his membership.

The letter also apologised for the "pain and embarrassment" he had caused and said he could "best serve the house by leaving it".

The peer's departure comes just a day after he signalled he could try to cling on to his seat in the House of Lords.

He quit his £84,500 a year role as deputy speaker of the Lords and chairman of the Lords privileges and conduct committee in the wake of the scandal.

But on Monday he requested a leave of absence "until the current investigations have been completed - which had left the door open for him to return to the chamber.

Ferry delays because of 'adverse weather' in Channel

Travellers hoping to cross from Dover to Calais could face more delays this morning because of poor weather conditions in the Channel.

P&O Ferries issued a warning to passengers there could be delays of up to 45 minutes, adding to existing problems caused by Operation Stack with freight traffic queuing on the M20.

Kent Police have closed the motorway between junctions 8 and 9 and are reminding freight drivers they need a ticket to join the queue. Tourist and local drivers are being redirected via the A2 and M2.

The reinstatement of Operation Stack comes just days after it was lifted following disruption caused by "migrant activity" and wildcat strikes by ferry workers in France in protest at job cuts.
