Suspected 'backpack bomber' wanted to blow up beach

A 23-year-old US man charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction told a source that he wanted to make a "timer bomb" that would blow up on a beach in Florida, the Justice Department has said

Suarez purchased components for this device, which was to contain galvanized nails, be concealed in a backpack and be remotely detonated by a cellphone.

Suarez intended to bury the device at a public beach in Key West and then detonate it.

A 23-year-old Florida resident has been charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction in the US, the Justice Department has said.

Harlem Suarez, also known as Almlak Benitez, of Key West, Florida, was charged in an alleged backpack bomb plot he planned to carry out.

Prosecutors allege that he was inspired by Islamic State.

The NFL has upheld the four-game suspension against New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady over "deflategate".

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that Brady's mobile phone had been destroyed before meeting with investigators in the scandal.

The use of under-inflated footballs in last season's AFC Championship game put the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

As well as Brady's ban, the club was fined $1 million over the controversy.

The star player could now take the case to federal court in a bid to overturn to the suspension.
