Elton John sends mince pies and coffee to waiting press

Newly-married Elton John and David Furnish have apparently taken pity on journalists waiting outside their home and sent out mince pies and coffee.

Sky News journalist Katie Spencer shared a picture of the treats on social media.

US consider putting North Korea back on terror list

President Barack Obama is considering the possibility of putting North Korea back on the US' terror list following the recent cyber attack on Sony Pictures.

Obama has said one option available to him is to punish North Korea for its act of "cyber-vandalism" by putting the country back on a list of state sponsors of terrorism, from which Pyongyang was removed six years ago.

New York mayor: Officers were shot 'execution style'

New York mayor Bill de Blasio has described the shooting of two New York City police officers yesterday as an 'execution style' killing.

Speaking today, as he ordered flags flown at half mast around the city as a mark of respect, de Blasio said: "Although we're still learning the details, it's clear that this was an assassination, that these officers were shot execution style."

Officers Rafael Ramos, 40, and Wenjian Liu, 32, were shot by 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley who then fled into a nearby underground station before killing himself.

Newcastle suffer fourth successive derby defeat

Adam Johnson's late winner condemned Newcastle United to a fourth successive derby defeat for the first time in their history as Sunderland earned a deserved 1-0 victory.

Johnson struck in the 90th minute following a pacy counter-attack to give the Black Cats only their third win of the season.

The away side created the better chances over the game with Steven Fletcher striking the crossbar and Connor Wickham, Jordi Gomez and Johnson all missing good opportunities to open the scoring.

The victory moves Sunderland up to 14th, four points below Newcastle who remain 9th.


US led forces target Islamic State in 16 air strikes

The US military has said that American led forces attacked Islamic State targets with 13 air strikes in Iraq and three in Syria, using fighter, bomber and other aircraft.

Four of the Iraq strikes were near Sinjar in northern Iraq, which destroyed Islamic State buildings, tactical units and vehicles. Other Iraqi cities targeted included Tal Afar, Ramadi, Mosul and Baiji, according to the Combined Joint Task Force.

The strikes in Syria focused around the contested city of Kobani near the Turkish border, it said in a statement.
