Report: Two bodies seen near Slaviansk

A Reuters TV witness said he had seen two bodies, one with gunshot wounds to the head and face, at a checkpoint outside the city of Slaviansk in eastern Ukraine where separatists said earlier they had come under armed attack.

One of the dead was dressed in combat fatigues and the other in civilian clothes. Police were at the scene carrying out an investigation, he said.

Syria has destroyed empty mustard gas containers and "made progress" closing chemical weapons production and storage sites, said the UN.

Sigrid Kaag, Special Coordinator of the OPCW-UN Joint Mission, said she expected further meetings with Syrian officials would keep removal efforts moving up to the 30 June target.

Easter celebrated across Ukraine

Despite the splits in the country Christians across Ukraine have been celebrating a traditional Easter. Candlelight vigils, Easter baskets and blessings have been given at churches and cathedrals.

Baby George opens bilby enclosure named in his honour

Prince George joined his parents at Taronga Zoo for the opening of the bilby enclosure which is named in his honour.

In their final official engagement in Sydney for this Royal Tour, William and Kate left Admiralty House with their son.

The Duke joked in a speech given when the Cambridges first arrived in Australia last week: "I suspect George's first word might be 'bilby' - only because koala is harder to say. We really look forward to our time here together as a family."

Prosecutors extend Korea ferry captain's detention

South Korean prosecutors investigating a ferry disaster said on Sunday they would seek to extend the detention of the ship's captain and two other crew by 10 days as they tried to determine the cause of an accident that may claim more than 300 lives.

"We are trying to find out if there is additional negligence," Prosecutor Yang Joong-jin told a news conference in Mokpo, one of the centres for the investigation.

Yang said that prosecutors had also summoned 10 other people to give evidence, including other crew from the Sewol and officials from the ferry's owner, Chonghaejin Marine Co Ltd.

South Korea sunken ferry death toll 'reaches 50'

After more than three days of frustration and failure, divers have finally found a way into a submerged ferry off South Korea's southern shore, discovering more than a dozen bodies inside the ship and pushing the confirmed death toll to 50.

More than 250 people are still missing, most of them high school students on a holiday trip, and anguished families are furious with the pace of rescue efforts.

State media: Five killed in gunfight in Slaviansk

Russian state television reported that five people were killed when gunmen attacked a checkpoint manned by pro-Russian separatists near the eastern Ukrainian city of Slaviansk.

The state-run Rossiya 24 news station, citing its correspondent in Slaviansk, said three of the dead were with the pro-Russian separatists who control Slaviansk, and the other two were from the group that attacked their checkpoint.
