Ed Miliband remains defiant as election draws nearer

Ed Miliband has insisted he is "not countenancing defeat" as he embarked on the final push of the election campaign.

The "optimistic" Labour leader said he would go "right down to the wire" to persuade wavering voters in the remaining hours before polls open.

Asked if he really believes he is going to be prime minister, he told broadcasters it will be in the hands of the people "and I know the people will make the right judgment."

But he again repeatedly refused to be drawn on what form negotiations might take in the event of a hung parliament.

The Russian former owner of Portsmouth Football Club has lost his High Court bid to block extradition to Lithuania where he faces £400 million fraud charges.

Vladimir Antonov, 39, and his Lithuanian business partner, Raimondas Baranauskas, 57, are both wanted to stand trial but say they are being used as "scapegoats" following the controversial nationalisation of Snoras, a leading Lithuanian bank they controlled.

They argue that the extradition request was made in bad faith and was "politically motivated" by the Lithuanian government's desire to end criticism from a newspaper owned by the bank.

But two High Court judges in London dismissed their challenge and said there was no evidence to support their claims.

The ex-South Africa international was targeted in the shop in Johannesburg, where armed men stole jewellery from him, according to his agent.

Percy Adams said one man pointed a gun at McCarthy's face and demanded his watch, earrings and wedding ring.

Adams told Eyewitness News that McCarthy was not hurt and other customers were not targeted in the incident.

McCarthy, who won the 2004 Champions League with Porto, is South Africa's record goal-scorer and played in Spain and Portugal as well as England, where he also had a spell with West Ham.

South Africa goalkeeper and captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot and killed in an apparent house robbery near Johannesburg last year. Police are still investigating.
