Sunny spells in the south and showers in the north

Cloud and outbreaks of rain will clear southern areas of Britain later this morning, with sunny spells following for the afternoon.

The sunshine will be milky at times as high cloud drifts by but it will mostly be pleasantly dry and bright.

Further north, frequent heavy showers will continue across North West England, Scotland and Northern Ireland along with gusty winds.

These showers will fall as sleet and snow for a time in the far north of Scotland where there's also a risk of thunder, lightning and hail.

Eastern Scotland and North East England, however, will escape with a largely fine, bright day.

Feeling cold in the blustery conditions across the north but temperatures will be close to the January average. After a mild start to the day across southern areas, we'll see highs of 7 or 8 Celsius this afternoon. In the north, temperatures will reach 4 or 5 degrees but it will be much cooler during any heavy downpours.

Church of England's first woman bishop to be consecrated

The Church of England's first female bishop will be consecrated in a ceremony later today.

The Reverend Libby Lane, 48, will be ordained as the new Bishop of Stockport in a service, conducted by the Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu, at York Minister.

It comes months after the General Synod formally adopted legislation allowing women bishops.

Speaking at the time her appointment was announced, the mother-of-two hailed the moment as "significant", adding: "I'm the first, but I won't be the only."
