The Metropolitan Police is preparing a "detailed" response after criticism of its delays in informing Leon Brittan's family that a rape charge against him had been dropped.

The response comes at the request of Mayor of London Boris Johnson, fter it emerged that the force had written to the former Home Secretary's widow, Lady Brittan, to apologise for not telling her sooner.

In an interview with ITV News, Lord Brittan's brother, Sir Samuel Brittan, accused police of "outrageous" treatment of the peer.

The Met said it expects to provide its response next week, "once all the material has been reviewed".
