The midfielder left United in 2005 after heavily criticising his team mates during an interview with the club's in-house television station.
Keane, who is now the assistant manager of Ireland, said: "Of course I was upset: I did shed a few tears in my car for about two minutes.
"But I also told myself I had to get on with my life.
"I walked out with nothing, I had no club lined up and I was injured.
"I could have played for Manchester United easily for another couple of years."

As night fell on the hundreds of thousands of protesters still outside government buildings in Bangkok, protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban made a speech to his supporters, calling for the prime minister to step down.
Mr Thaugsuban said Yingluck Shinawatra's government corrupt and incompetent and has called for a "people's council" of appointed "good people" to replace the government. He said:
"From this minute onwards, all Thais have taken power back for the people."
The rotor blades of a helicopter that crashed into the roof of a Glasgow pub stopped spinning before the point of impact, investigators said.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said: "All main rotor blades were attached at the time of impact but neither the main rotor nor the fenestron tail rotor were rotating."
The AAIB said initial investigations showed no evidence of engine or gearbox failure.

A couple who live next door to the house in Bolton, who did not wish to be named, said they were woken by an explosion, which apparently came from the kitchen area of the property. They then saw smoke fill the building.
Stuart Whittle, who lives opposite, said he arrived home in the early hours to a fog of smoke.
He said: "As I got closer I could see fire engines and police cars. I didn't think anyone was in the house."
Another close neighbour, Maria Taylor, 48, said she was woken by the sound of fire engines and then heard smashing glass as firefighters broke in to gain access to the property.
There is no initial evidence of engine or gearbox failure in the case of the police helicopter that crashed into a Glasgow pub, an Air Accidents Investigation Branch report has said.
Mourners have gathered in Paisley to pay their last respects to Gary Arthur, the first of the Glasgow helicpoter crash victims who was publicly named.
The humanist service at Woodside Crematorium was estimated to have been attended by 400 to 500 people, many of whom had to stand outside.
In a statement released ahead of the funeral, Mr Arthur's family said: "We loved him dearly and always will, we will miss him so much.
"We will continue to make him proud. He always tried to do his best for us and to be there for us. He was the best dad and it's devastating that our dad has been taken from us in such a tragic way."
