Carter: Russia's actions in Syria carry risks

US Defense Secretary Ash Carter has said Russia's actions in Syria are "risky" and "will only inflame the civil war".

He added that Nato "stood strong" against Russia in Ukraine and this "strengthened posture".

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has said Russian behaviour "threatens our allies".

He is speaking at a press conference in London along with US Defence Secretary Ash Carter.

Mr Fallon said: "Aggressive Russian behaviour continues threatening our allies in Europe."

He also announced £70m is to be invested in defence innovation.

First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has wished nurse Pauline Cafferkey a "speedy recovery".

Pauline Cafferkey is being treated for a late complication of the Ebola infection.


Austria launch language app for Syrian refugee children

The Austrian government has announced it is helping to launch a new language app designed to help refugee children learn the local language.

'Hallo App Deutsch' will contain 1,000 everyday words accompanied by pictures and sound to help children who can't yet read roman script to develop a basic German vocabulary.

Austria's Education Minister Gabriele Heinisch-Hosek said the app will help youngsters integrate themselves and make it easier for them to communicate with people in the countries where they are arriving.

She said "Learning the language is a vital key for integration. This new app represents a major step in promoting language-learning."
