The police officer shot dead in Florida has been named as Charles Kondek.

The 45-year-old was shot dead "in the line of duty" after responding to a call in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Konek had been a police officer for over 17 years and had previously worked for the New York City Police Department.

Local media reported that Konek was a father-of-five.

An investigation into the incident has been launched, the department added, with more details about the circumstances expected to be released later.

Man in coma after 'vicious' brick attack in street

A man has suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit over the head with a brick during a row in a Birmingham street.

The victim, 40, is believed to have been walking to his local shops along Stud Lane, Stechford, when he became involved in an altercation with another man at midday on Saturday.

A witness told police how his attacker "picked up a brick before striking him over the head" and leaving him unconscious in the street.

The victim has been placed in an induced coma in hospital while doctors assess his head injury.

Police said it was a "vicious attack on a local family man", describing it as "an outrageous response to a verbal spat in the street".

The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s with mousy brown hair, and was wearing a light blue padded jacket, jeans and trainers.

US consider putting North Korea back on terror list

President Barack Obama is considering the possibility of putting North Korea back on the US' terror list following the recent cyber attack on Sony Pictures.

Obama has said one option available to him is to punish North Korea for its act of "cyber-vandalism" by putting the country back on a list of state sponsors of terrorism, from which Pyongyang was removed six years ago.

New York mayor: Officers were shot 'execution style'

New York mayor Bill de Blasio has described the shooting of two New York City police officers yesterday as an 'execution style' killing.

Speaking today, as he ordered flags flown at half mast around the city as a mark of respect, de Blasio said: "Although we're still learning the details, it's clear that this was an assassination, that these officers were shot execution style."

Officers Rafael Ramos, 40, and Wenjian Liu, 32, were shot by 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley who then fled into a nearby underground station before killing himself.
