Police officer killed following burglary

A police officer has been killed following a burglary at an estate agents in the early hours of this morning.

During the burglary the offenders stole a red Mitsubishi pick-up truck which police gave chase to.

The Mitsubishi mounted the central reservation where two neighbourhood officers were standing after deploying a stop stick in a bid to stop the car.

The Mitsubishi struck one of the officers and was then driven off at speed.

The officer's colleagues carried out CPR at the scene but he died a short while later in hospital.

The stolen car was later found abandoned in Corbyn Street, Wallasey.

Heavy rain and windy conditions ahead on Monday

Wet weather across central areas will move north through the day with the rain turning heavy at times.

Drier conditions will follow but with locally heavy showers developing and there is the threat of another period of more persistent rain developing across south-eastern England.

It will be windy for all parts, with gales in exposed western areas for a time.
