Thailand's military ruler has apologised for suggesting tourists would be unsafe wearing bikinis on the country's beaches just days after two British backpackers were found murdered.

Prayuth Chan-O-Cha was reported to say pretty women made themselves more vulnerable to attacks by wearing a bikini after Hannah Witheridge and David Miller were found murdered on the island of Koh Tao.

The comments triggered a backlash online with many taking to Twitter to voice their disgust.

General Paryuth has since apologised, saying he had not meant to criticise anyone and said the country was safe for tourists.

He said: "I apologise that I have spoken too harshly ... I didn't mean to criticise or look down on anyone. Today I can guarantee that Thailand is still safe ... I wanted to warn (the tourists) to be careful."
