Poll: Majority of Britons do not see benefit of EU membership

A ComRes poll for ITV indicates the majority of Britons do not see what benefits the UK gets from European Union membership.

The survey, taken before Mr Cameron's speech on Europe this morning, found 53% of the public do not see a plus side to EU membership.

Given the choice tomorrow on EU membership, 48% of people would vote to leave, while 32% would rather stay in, with the remainder undecided.

Significantly, more than in 7 in 10 respondents (72%) said they thought EU membership was bad in terms of its effect on immigration into the UK - an area the Prime Minister focused on today.

However almost two thirds of people (62%) said they thought the EU was a positive in terms of being able to move freely around other member states.

ComRes interviewed 2,049 British adults online between 21st and 23rd November 2014.

MoD: Russian ships have now left British waters

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that four Russian warships have now left British waters.

The squadron was escorted by a ship from the Royal Navy as they made their way through the Strait of Dover.

Four Russian naval ships have passed through the Dover Strait from the North Sea into the English Channel, which all ships have the right to do under international law. The ships were escorted by the Royal Navy warship HMS Tyne as part of her UK maritime security role and have now left UK waters.

Russian warships 'enter English Channel for drills'

A squadron of Russian warships entered the English Channel on Friday to hold exercises, according to the RIA Novosti news agency.

RIA quoted the Russian navy's Northern Fleet saying the ships had passed through the Strait of Dover and were now in neutral waters in the Seine Bay, waiting for a storm to pass.

France's navy confirmed the location of the ships and said it was not unusual to have Russian warships in the Channel.

"They are not holding exercises. They’re just waiting in a zone where they can be several times a year," said the French Navy's information service.
