A woman has been arrested in connection with the Manchester bombing following an armed raid on a block of flats in the north of the city.

Witnesses reported hearing a "huge bang" as police raided the building in Northland Road, Blackley, on Wednesday evening.

Greater Manchester Police said: "A search was carried out and a woman has been arrested in connection with the investigation into the Manchester Arena incident."

Resident Chris Barlow said: "There was about 30 people on the street - they said there's been an explosion at the flats, a bomb or explosion."

"There's CTU (counter terrorism unit) special forces - I spoke to one officer and they said they blew the door in and took a couple of people away."

Police remain outside the building, with officers only allowing residents to access the last stretch of road leading to the block.

One thousand extra armed police officers have been freed up to carry out patrols across the UK after regular defence was bolstered by the military, the Metropolitan Police has said.

The military has provided armed guards for key locations and transport hubs across London after the terror threat level was raised to critical.

The use of the soldiers at sites like Buckingham Palace, Downing Street, the Palace of Westminster and major embassies means armed officers usually standing guard at the sites can be used elsewhere.

Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, head of national Counter Terrorism Policing, said: "We are grateful to the military who have enabled us to put even more police on the streets to protect the public at this time."

Scotland Yard said the police plan - named Operation Temperer - was seeing it and partners "do everything they can to protect the public".
