Two Israeli soldiers and 10 Palestinians killed in clashes

Israel's military has killed a further 10 Palestinians continuing it offensive against the Gaza Strip amid diplomatic pressure to end the worst violence in five years between Islamist Hamas and Israel.

Plumes of dark black smoke rose into the sky above Gaza, and shells continued to rain down on the coastal enclave, while Hamas and its allies fired 11 rockets across the border into southern Israel, the army said.

With the conflict entering its third week, the Palestinian death toll rose to almost 550, including nearly 100 children and many other civilians, Gaza health officials said. The Israeli military said it had killed 183 militants. Israel's military announced the deaths of two more soldiers, bringing the number of army fatalities to 27.

The long journey back to Amsterdam for MH17 victims

The bodies of flight MH17 victims have begun a long journey back to the Dutch city where they boarded the downed airliner almost five days ago.

  • The victims' bodies are travelling to the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv
  • International experts will then start the process of identifying the remains
  • Afterwards they will be flown to Amsterdam before repatriation begins
  • A Dutch C130 Hercules has been sent to bring the MH17 victims back
  • An Australian military plane is also available to assist with the operation

Gaza death toll rises to 568 including 100 children

Israel continued its assaults in the Gaza Strip killing three Palestinians in as many air strikes, as the US Secretary of State John Kerry travelled to Egypt to seek a ceasefire in the 14-day-old conflict "as soon as possible."

Deaths in Khan Younis, Beit Hanoun and Beit Lahiya saw the Palestinian death toll reach 539, including nearly 100 children and many other civilians, since the offensive was launched on July 8, Gaza health officials said.

Israel's death toll also rose to 29, with two soldiers killed in the past day of fighting, the Israeli military said. The total includes two civilian killed by rocket fire.

The Israel Defence Forces claim they have killed "183 terrorists" and have struck "1,388 terror sites" since ground operations began in Gaza.

Suicide bomber 'attacks Ukrainian checkpoint'

A suicide bomber in a minibus has attacked a Ukrainian checkpoint in the Donetsk region, a spokesman for military operations in eastern Ukraine said.

According to Reuters, a spokesman for the "anti-terrorist operation" against separatists who have rebelled in eastern Ukraine told 112 television channel: "A checkpoint was attacked by a suicide bomber in a van packed with explosives."
