Talks set to resume over national rail strike

Talks are to resume tomorrow with members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union at Network Rail (NR)e due to walk out for 24 hours from next Thursday evening and 48 hours the following week, threatening travel chaos after a new pay offer was rejected.

The two sides agreed to meet at the conciliation service Acas to try to resolve the dispute and avert strike action. The talks were adjourned last night, resumed today and will start again tomorrow. The workers, including signallers and maintenance staff, are also planning to ban overtime from June 6-12.

Report: Islamic State blow up a major prison complex

A group monitoring the war said Islamic State blew up a major prison complex in the central Syrian city of Palmyra.

The prison was empty at the time of the detonation, said Rami Abdulrahman from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The sprawling complex is not located among the city's ancient ruins. Islamic State captured the city, also known as Tadmur, from government forces earlier this month.

He once again,denied any personal wrong-doing and insisted he was the only man to solve Fifa's problems. Facing reporters for the first time since he won the Fifa vote, he batted away questions about bribes, his possible arrest and why he has not resigned.
