Civilians hit by fresh attacks as ceasefire unravels

At least 40 Palestinians have been killed today by Israeli shelling today along with two soldiers as the ceasefire quickly unraveled.

Israel and Hamas accused each other of breaking the cease-fire, took effect at 8:00 am local time this morning. Fighting broke out less than two hours later.

As fighting raged on, resident of Rafah fled their homes and ran for cover, whilst Rafah hospital was inundated with injured civilians, including children.

Unicef said a quarter of Gaza's population has now been displaced by the ongoing violence between the Israeli military and Hamas militants.

Gaza officials say at least 1,509 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed and 7,000 wounded.

Hammond: Ceasefire collapse is 'extremely depressing'

The quick breakdown of the ceasefire in Gaza is "extremely depressing," according to Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, but he said that ending suffering remained the top priority.

He said: "Diplomacy is never dead. We have always got to keep trying but it is obviously extremely depressing that this ceasefire that we've all worked so hard to get broke down so quickly."

The Israeli soldier apparently captured by Hamas militants this morning is not a UK dual citizen, according to the Reuters reporter in the region Dan Williams.

Earlier reports from Channel 4 News claimed Hadar Goldin was the British-Israeli cousin of Israel's defence minister.
