Service sector enjoys 'best performance in 17 years'

Britain's service sector enjoyed its best performance in 17 years, with firms in areas such as accountancy, law and marketing bouncing back after a weak start to the year, figures show.

The Confederation of British Industry said business and professional services had reported their best-ever period in the three months to August, according to data going back to 1998.

The services sector represents more than 75 per cent of UK output.

Call for more funding to tackle wildfire problem in US

More federal funding is needed to help prevent wildfires in America, officials were told - with experts warning current policies have left forests "explosive".

It comes after dozens of blazes tore through western US states, torching 1.7 million acres (685,000 hectares) of land.

Fire experts addressed a meeting of the US Senate's energy committee in Seattle, Washington, which in recent weeks has seen the largest cluster of deadly fires on record.

Western Washington University's chairman of environmental studies, Michael Medler, told the meeting that increasing use of controlled burns and creating greater barriers between developments and forests were key to cutting the risk of it happening again in future.

To put it bluntly, the last century of fire policies have left our forests explosive.

Thousands of firefighters are still battling more than 60 large fires.

Thirteen have been killed on duty so far this year.

3,000 post offices now open on Sundays

The number of post offices open on Sundays has reached 3,000 as the firm tries to keep up with changing demands, new figures show.

The milestone figure was reached when the Bergh Apton branch in Norfolk opened its doors - offering a garden centre, farm shop and restaurant as well as traditional postal services.

Our customers' needs are changing, and so are we. We intend to be the largest retail network in the UK open seven days a week.

Figures from The Post Office show the earliest branch opening time was 3.30am, while other branches close as late as midnight.

Three branches are open 24 hours a day.

What is the effect of growing migration on Britain?

Critics claim Britain is now a "borderless" country as figures showed net migration has hit a record high.

Official figures from the Office for National Statistics showed net migration for the year to March 2015, was 330,000, up 40% on the previous year.

Some experts claim the figures are a sign of a growing UK economy.
