Cameron: Only Tories can offer 'competence' on immigration'

The Prime Minister has insisted that only the Tories can offer "competence" on dealing with immigration and his plans to reform European welfare rules would be an "absolute requirement" in his proposed renegotiation of the UK's links with Brussels.

An influential Commons committee has highlighted a series of failures in the immigration system but the David Cameron claimed "real progress" had been made in addressing the issue and voting for Labour or Ukip would deliver "chaos".

But the scale of the challenge faced by the Tories, who had set a goal of reducing net migration to the "tens of thousands", was underlined by the scathing Home Affairs Select Committee report.

Ebola death toll rises to 7,373

The death toll from the Ebola outbreak has risen to 7,373 out of 19,091 known cases of the virus.

The World Health Organisation posted the latest figures on its website to reflect nearly 500 new deaths that have been recorded since Wednesday.

Morgan 'honoured' to be chosen as captain

England's new one-day cricket captain has said it is a "huge honour" to be chosen for the role.

Eoin Morgan said: “It is a huge honour to captain England and I am delighted to be leading the one-day side.

"I firmly believe that with the players currently involved in the one-day set up we have the makings of a very good one-day side, a young side that can surprise people at the World Cup."

Cook 'gutted' to miss out on World Cup squad place

England's former one-day cricket captain Alistair Cook has said he feels "gutted" after losing out on a place in England's World Cup cricket squad.

Speaking today, as Eoin Morgan was announced as his replacement for the captaincy, Cook said: “I am gutted to be left out of the World Cup squad and it is likely to take me a while to get over the disappointment.

"That said I wish Peter, Eoin and the lads all the best for the World Cup."

The ECB announced the new captaincy today saying the appointment would take place with immediate effect.

National Selector James Whitaker said: “We spent a considerable time yesterday discussing the make up of a squad that gives England the best possible chance of success at the World Cup which begins in less than two months.

"Having reviewed the recent series against Sri Lanka we came to the conclusion that there was no place for Alastair Cook amongst our strongest 15 one-day players and therefore recommended Eoin Morgan be appointed One-Day captain.”

'Grave consequences' if US refuse joint Sony hacking probe

North Korea has warned the US government of 'grave consequences' if they refuse to take part in a joint probe into the recent Sony cyber attack.

A warning was also issued to the US to stop making accusations suggesting North Korea was involved in the attack, Korea's central news agency reports.
