Talks aimed at establishing a free trade deal between Canada and the EU are reported to have failed.

Canada's trade minister Chrystia Freeland announced the intense talks had broken down as she walked out of meetings with EU leaders in Brussels.

All 28 EU governments support the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

But the bloc cannot approve the deal without support from five five sub-federal administrations, and French-speaking Wallonia has steadfastly opposed it.



Charles delivers Queen's message to Aberfan mourners

Prince Charles has delivered a personal message from the Queen in which she pays tribute to the "indomitable spirit" of the people of Aberfan on the 50th anniversary of the coalslide disaster that claimed 144 lives.

Her Majesty also made reference to the poet who wrote that "all the elements of tragedy are here" after attending the devastated Welsh village.
