Kidnapped US missionary released in central Nigeria

An US missionary who was kidnapped in central Nigeria in February has been safely released to authorities and church leaders, her Free Methodist Church said in a statement.

Reverend Phyllis Sortor, a Free Methodist missionary to Nigeria, was safely released in Nigeria on Friday evening local time into the care of authorities and church leaders, the church said. She was abducted on February 23.

UN condemns destruction of Nimrud as a 'war crime'

The United Nations has condemned as a war crime its assault on the relics of one of humanity's earliest civilisations.

For almost two thousand years the Assyrian empire ruled over a huge area of Iraq and Syria, with the ancient city of Nimrud at its heart.

Cyber attack suspect held in Midlands

A man suspected of trying to hack into the United States Department of Defence was arrested in the Midlands as part of a nationwide swoop against cyber crime.

A series of bizarre messages were posted online after the alleged cyber attack.

In all, 57 people were held in separate operations this week.

Britain's broadcasters and Downing Street are at a hostile standoff in a row over televised election debates between party leaders. ITV, the BBC, Channel 4 and Sky jointly said they would continue with plans to stage three debates, with or without David Cameron's presence.

Man charged with murder of cyclist stabbed on bike

A man has been charged with the murder of teenager Alan Cartwright who was stabbed while riding a bicycle with friends in Islington, north London.

Joshua Williams, 18, of Davenant Road, north London, will appear tomorrow at Highbury Corner Magistrates' court charged with murder and conspiracy to rob, Scotland Yard said.

An 18-year-old man remains in custody after a warrant of further detention was granted.

Two males, aged 17 and 21, arrested in relation to the incident have been bailed.

Police released footage of the moment the schoolboy was stabbed in the chest as he cycled along a busy road in Islington.

He managed to continue riding a short distance after the attack in Caledonian Road last Friday, but collapsed and was later pronounced dead at the scene.
