Greek voters go to the polls in crunch referendum

Voters in Greece are set to go to the polls later in a crunch referendum on the country's debt deal, with the impact effecting the rest of Europe whatever the result. Its government has left it for the people to decide whether to accept an austerity package put forward by international lenders in return for a further bailout from the eurozone rescue fund.

Banks have been closed all week to prevent a run driven by savers withdrawing cash amid uncertainty about whether the country will crash out of the euro, after falling into arrears with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).


London Fire Brigade: Warehouse blaze 'under control'

A fire in north west London which saw more than 100 firefighters battling a warehouse blaze is now "under control", according to the London Fire Brigade.

Social housing cash to 'raise £250m a year to reduce debt'

The extra cash raised from cuts to subsidies for high earners living in social housing will go straight to the Exchequer where people are living in local authority properties.

As much as £250 million a year by 2018-19 could be raised towards reducing the country's debt burden. Expectations are that Chancellor George Osborne will argue that 9% of all social tenants in England are now on higher incomes while enjoying the benefit of an average £3,500-a-year per household in reduced rent.

They include over 40,000 with annual household incomes in excess of £50,000 and a further 300,000 with incomes over £30,000. The move builds on measures introduced under the coalition that enabled housing associations and local authorities to charge market rents to those on incomes of more than £60,000.

30 people evacuated from blaze in north west London

Around 30 people were had to be evacuated from a building amid a blaze in north west London thought there were no reports of any injuries. Plumes of thick black smoke could be seen for miles as the flames tore through the two-storey building in west London.

Local residents have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed to stop toxic fumes getting into their homes.
