Members of Rochdale grooming ring convicted

Nine men have been convicted of sexually exploiting young girls in Rochdale. The girls were given food, alcohol and money in return for sex.

The girls are white and were between the ages of 13 and 15 at the time. One was in care while the others were from troubled backgrounds.

They became the victims of a network of Asian men.

After the men had befriended the girls they plied them with alcohol and sexually exploited.

They were flattered by the attention and thought the men were their friends.

But they were also scared of what they might do if they refused to have sex.

They were then driven to flats and forced to have sex with other men. For some of the girls it became a way of life.

Outside the court in Liverpool there have been protests from far-right groups including the English Defence League and the British National Party.

There has also been tension in Heywood where some of the offences took place.

Takeaway windows have been smashed and people have protested on the streets.
