Hopes of a shallow recession cut short

The economy sank deeper into a double-dip recession in the first three months of this year.

New figures from the Office for National Statistics show that GDP was down by 0.3% - even more than earlier predictions suggested.

The construction sector has been hit the hardest with output down by 4.8% - the steepest decline in 11 years.

Today's figures put even more pressure on the Government to respond to the IMF's calls for a Plan B to get the economy moving again.
