Mariah Carey is joining the judging panel of American Idol after two high profile departures.
The show, which will begin its 12th series in the US next year, has been looking for a new judge since Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez left.
The show's new signing was announced by Fox Television executive Kevin Reilly.
According to Digital Spy the announcement was made at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour.
A phone call between Carey and Reilly was played to the audience where she reportedly said:
I am so excited to be joining Idol. I wanted to be there today and I wish I could have been there myself to tell you. I can't wait to get started in a couple months.
Fox executive Mike Darnell praised Mariah's incredible career:
Mariah Carey is the real deal.
Not only is she one of the best-selling artists and performers on the planet and one of the world’s most gifted vocalists, she also is a successful songwriter, record producer and actress.
She has a deep knowledge of music and a career insight that will make her a really amazing asset to our judges’ table and to our contestants.
