British diplomat rode rollercoaster with North Korean leader
A young British diplomat has been revealed as the mystery man seen enjoying amusement park thrills with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.
The shot of the new marshal strapped into a rollercoaster with a beaming smile surprised many when it was revealed last week.
But soon the intrigue focused on the identity of the Western man riding in the seats in front of him.
He has now been confirmed as Barnaby Jones, the chargé d'affaires based at the UK embassy in Pyongyang, prompting more questions on what such a figure was doing on the same ride as the young dictator.
The Foreign Office accepted it was an "unusual event" but explained it was all part of modern diplomacy with the notoriously reclusive regime recently inherited by Kim Jong-Un.
– Foreign Office statementPyongyang's diplomatic community was invited to the opening of the Rungna People's Pleasure Ground. This included the chargĂ© d'affaires of the British Embassy, who accepted the invitation to attend. While this was an unusual event, it is vital that we actively engage with the North Korean administration since we work closely with them on a number of humanitarian, cultural and education projects which benefit the people of North Korea.
