SpaceX launches Dragon cargo capsule to International Space Station

The first commercially contracted re-supply mission to the International Space Station (ISS) has lifted off from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

The SpaceX Falcon rocket and its Dragoncargo spacecraft was launched at 20:35 (00:35 GMT) cargo capsule was launched at 20:35 (00:35 GMT).

The Dragon ship will deliver 400kg of food, clothing, experiments and spares to the ISS's six astronauts.

It is the maiden flight of 12 privately contracted cargo flights to be operated by Space Exploration Technologies Corporation as part of Nasa's program to outsource some of its operations to private contractors.
