In the city of Hoboken in New Jersey - just across the river from New York - around 20,000 residents remain stranded in their homes, surrounded by contaminated water, following Superstorm Sandy.

Many of them who had ignored advice to leave, are being evacuated tonight by the National Guard following four days without power.

At least a quarter of the city's residents are flooded and 90 per cent are without power.
