James Arthur has won the ninth series of The X Factor after seeing off Jahmene Douglas in the final.
Arthur was lost for words when he was announced the competition’s winner, managing only to say “wow” when asked how he felt.
The 24-year-old from Saltburn near Middlesbrough in North Yorkshire had received stunning comments from the judges after performing his final two live songs on the show.
It caps a remarkable journey for the singer who finished in the bottom two early on in the live stages of the competition after struggling with his performance of Mary J Blige's No More Drama.
Arthur, who was championed by mentor Nicole Scherzinger, has admitted having problems at school and slept rough on occasions before volunteering to go into foster care.
His winner’s single, a rendition of Impossible by Shontelle, will now be released in a bid to top the Christmas charts.
He performed the song on his final appearance of this year's competition, having earlier given a rendition of Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye.
