Two guests staying at an exclusive hotel in Essex have been found dead in a swimming pool.

The man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s were found underwater at the Down Hall Country House Hotel in Hatfield Heath on Saturday evening.

Police say they are treating the deaths as "unexplained" but are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident. They also confirmed the pair were staying at the hotel together.

As part of the investigation we are trying to focus on what the relationship was between the victims

It's a very busy hotel, there were a number of functions going on.

At the moment we haven't ascertained as to whether these individuals were part of any function or not.

A post-mortem examination will take place on Monday.

The manager of the hotel has said the staff have been left "devastated" following the death of the two guests:

We are devastated by this tragic incident and our thoughts are with the families and friends of those concerned.

As soon as the alarm was raised, two of our team dived into the pool and did everything they could to try to save them.

We are co-operating fully with the police investigation.

– Hotel manager Chris Falcus

The hotel is one of the most exclusive venues in Hertfordshire and Essex, and was the location for the wedding of reality TV star Jade Goody and Jack Tweed in 2009.
