It is possible, but far from certain that some of our biggest oil companies have been breaking the rules. The claim is that they have manipulated the prices of fuel on the financial markets.
The billions of pounds of deals selling oil and bio fuels around the world are a long way from the cash we hand over when we fill up at the pump.
But if the claims are proved to be true, drivers here could have been paying over the odds for years.
What is interesting though about this is that the UK Office for Fair Trading investigated allegations of rip offs on fuel prices and found the evidence was just not there. But with raids on offices in three countries across the continent, the EU authorities are clearly believe it is worth pursuing this potential problem.
