Both bands found fame on The X Factor and have since gone on to sell millions of records.
One Direction's Zayn Malik is also engaged to Little Mix member Perrie Edwards.
Last year, One Direction were the big winners taking home three awards.
One Direction, who took home three awards last year, are also up for Best British Single for their hit Best Song Ever.
The X Factor theme continues at the awards with former contestant Olly Murs in the running for Best British Solo Artist and Best Single for Troublemaker.
Doctor Who is up against reality show Geordie Shore and soap Coronation Street for the title of Best British TV Show.
Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is up against fellow player Laura Robson, footballer Gareth Bale and Welsh rugby star Leigh Halfpenny for the Best British Sports Star award.
Nominations were announced today during Matt Edmondson's show and fans have until 12 noon on Saturday 19 October to vote for their favourites online on the BBC Radio 1 website.
The winners of the awards will be announced during a star-studded ceremony hosted by Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw and singer Rita Ora at Wembley Arena on Sunday 3 November.
As well as celebrating the very best in music, sport, entertainment and the internet the event will also recognise the achievements of three very special Teen Heroes.
The Editor of BBC Radio 1, Jocelin Stainer, said the awards were "really special" because of the involvement of the stations listeners:
BBC Radio 1's Teen Awards are now firmly established as a key event in the music and entertainment calendar. The awards are for Radio 1 audiences and voted for by them which make them really special.
