July 2013: An heir is born

All eyes were on the front door of the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital, London, in July 2013 as the world awaited its first glimpse of the newest addition to the royal family.

HRH Prince George Louis Alexander of Cambridge was born at 4.24pm on July 22, weighing 8lbs 6oz, and an official notification of his birth was placed on an easel in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace hours later.

The following day Prince George left the hospital with his proud parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and the newborn was introduced to millions worldwide by the vast bank of waiting media.

The third in line to the throne was cradled by his beaming parents as they posed for the cameras amid loud cheers from well wishes.

Prince William joked: "He's got a good pair of lungs on him, that's for sure. He's a big boy, he's quite heavy. We are still working on a name so we will have that as soon as we can."

"It's the first time we have seen him really so we are having a proper chance to catch up."

Kate added: "It's very emotional, it's such a special time. I think any parent will know what this feeling feels like."

After introducing their son to the world, Kate and William then retreated to Berkshire for some "private and quiet time" to bond with the newborn.

One month on and the young prince was shown off the world again in a series of official photographs, taken by his grandfather Michael Middleton a the family home in Bucklebury.

He was pictured sleeping peacefully in the arms of his mother in a shady spot of the garden flanked by his father, their dog Lupo and a golden retriever belonging to the Middleton family.

In October Prince George was christened in a small and private service at the Chapel Royal at St James's Palace, wearing a replica of the intricate lace and satin gown made for Queen Victoria's eldest daughter in 1841.

It was then announced that his parents had asked seven people to be godparents, including William's cousin Zara Tindall.
