Osborne's Budget must tackle notion that the recovery will only benefit the rich

I think our poll ahead of the Budget is interesting - it shows just how low people's expectations are.

It's not all bad news. I think the idea that 41% of people think the country is heading in the right direction is reasonably OK if you're the Chancellor.

But his big political problem is this notion - very deep-seated and I think, strongly felt - that people fear the recovery will only benefit the rich and will only really rub off on the wealthy.

George Osborne must change that if the Tories are to stand a chance of winning a majority at the next election.

Tomorrow is the point where I think that has to begin to change - to try and change it a few months before an election is too hard a task.

I think he's got to begin that process tomorrow and I think he's acutely aware of that.
