Hollywood actor James Franco has admitted "bad judgement" after a 17-year-old Scottish girl published flirtatious messages he had sent to her.
Lucy Clode, on holiday in New York with her mother, had met 35-year-old Franco outside his show on Broadway and tagged him in an Instagram video of the two together.
He then used the picture-sharing social network to send private messages to her in which he asked whether she was single and if he should rent a room at her hotel.
Lucy, from Dollar in Clackmannanshire, then uploaded screenshots of the exchange to photo site Imgur.
After speculation that the story may have been a publicity stunt for Franco's new film Palo Alto - in which he plays a sports coach who seduces a young girl on his team - the actor appeared on a US chat show and said the "embarrassing" story was true.
"I'm embarrassed," he told the Kelly & Michael show. "I guess I'm just a model of how social media is tricky.
"It's a way people meet each other today but what I've learned, I guess just because I'm new to it, you don't know who's on the other end.
"I used bad judgement and I learned my lesson.
"Unfortunately in my position, and I have a very good life but not only do I have to go through the embarrassing rituals of meeting someone, sometimes if I do that then it gets published for the world, so it's doubly embarrassing."
Miss Clode's Instagram account has since been removed.
