Renowned Irish character actress Pauline McLynn will be joining EastEnders to play Charlie Cotton's mother.
Viewers will remember McLynn for her star turn as the long-suffering house keeper Mrs Doyle in classic Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted.
Show bosses said the Irish actress, who also starred in Shameless, will have "a recurring guest role" as Yvonne Cotton, appearing on screens next month.
Her arrival in Albert Square is a far cry from her tenure on Craggy Island, where she served tea to priests at the parish.
