Users of the BBC News app were left baffled by a surprising breaking news alert on Wednesday morning.

A push notification with a rambling message about hit television series Game of Thrones was sent to thousands.

The same message was then sent out again soon after to add to the confusion.

Screenshots of the error quickly spread across social media.

The BBC has since apologised for the mistake, claiming two test notifications were sent by mistake.

A BBC spokesperson later told ITV News: “We’ve been in the process of testing new functionality for our Apps and a test message was sent in error this morning. We apologise to our App users who were unnecessarily interrupted with the alert.”
