A giant tortoise named Dirk has been reunited with his owners after police in LA launched a Facebook appeal to find them.

The 150-pound reptile was spotted by officers from the Alhambra Police Department ambling down a suburban street eating grass and leaves.

He is so heavy it took two officers to lift him into a patrol car so they could turn him over to the authorities.

Appealing for Dirk's owners to come forward, the police department posted photographs of him on their Facebook page and joked: "Which is faster? The Hare or the Tortoise?

It added: "The tortoise did try to make a run for it; but, our officers are pretty fast. Almost had a pursuit!"

Two days later they updated their page saying: "He has been reunited with his human family. Thank you Alhambra partners and FB friends!"
