A traffic officer saved a woman's life after leaping into action when he found her choking behind the wheel of her car.
What started out as a routine traffic stop for Officer Jason Gates turned into anything but when he realised she was in serious trouble.
Gates, who is based in Kalamazoo, Michigan, had pulled the woman over for running a red light.
He told America's Newsroom he initially suspected she was faking the attack to get out of a ticket - but quickly realised she was in real danger.
The whole thing was recorded on his dashboard camera.
After slapping her back failed to dislodge the trapped food, he hauled her from the car and performed the Heimlich manoeuvre three times to free her windpipe.
He said while he had been given emergency training, it was the first time he had performed the live-saving trick on a real person.
The video shows the woman burst into tears and hug the officer as she overcame the shock of her experience.
