A 45-year-old man has been sent to prison for two years and eight months for deliberately infecting a woman with HIV.
Alan Mason, who pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm at an earlier hearing, was sentenced today at Carlisle Crown Court.
Mason met the 39-year-old victim in a pub and they started a sexual relationship but he did not tell her that he is HIV positive.
The woman from Cumbria only became aware she had been infected with the virus after visiting her doctor.
Detective Constable Damian West from Cumbria Police said: "Even though the victim has to live with this virus, modern medication means there should be no impact on life expectancy.
"However, the virus has a significant day-to-day impact on those who have to live with it."
