Tax discs have been adorning car windscreens for more than 90 years, but as of 1st October they will be consigned to the scrapheap.
Instead, all drivers will be entered into an electronic register that will show whether they are up-to-date on their vehicle tax.
Automatic number plate recognition cameras will be used to cross-reference vehicles with their electronic records.
For many, the annual ritual of buying a tax disc, tearing along its perforations and squeeze it into the holder won't be missed.
