General Election 2015: How to register your vote in time

Today is National Voter Registration Day.

Bite the Ballot came up with the scheme last year amid concerns over the lack of awareness and education about voter registration.

In the past, one member of a household could sign everyone else up to vote but this was scrapped last summer in a move aimed at reducing electoral fraud.

Every voter now has to sign up for themselves.

This year, Bite the Ballot is aiming to register 250,000 voters in time for the general election.

Here is a handy guide to help ensure you make your vote count on May 7.

How do I register?

  • You can register online using your National Insurance number
  • The process takes around five minutes
  • Alternatively, you can also register by post

When is the deadline?

  • Anyone who wants to vote on Thursday 7 May must be registered by April 20

Who can register?

  • Anyone over 16 can register but you cannot vote until you are 18

Still unsure? Watch why registering to vote was so important to this 19-year-old.
