Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for a man accused of shooting dead nine people at a church in South Carolina.

Court documents showed officials hope to secure the maximum sentence against Dylann Roof, who allegedly carried out the massacre at a Charleston church in June.

The 21-year-old denied 33 charges, including nine counts of murder, three attempted murder, hate crimes and obstructing the practice of religion during a court hearing last month.

Nine black people were slain at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church during a Bible study session on June 17.
