Tim Peake controls a Mars rover from the International Space Station

Video report by ITV News' Science Correspondent Alok Jha

British astronaut Tim Peake is taking a different kind of driving test today - he's testing out controlling a Mars rover, which is in a hangar near London, from the International Space Station.

The 90-minute test drive will see Tim maneuver the rover - named Bridget - around in the Mars Yard, which mimics the conditions on Mars, and will help researchers understand more about future missions to Mars.

His goal is to find his own route through the cave and locate specific areas that have been marked with an X.
