A small boy has his mother to thank after she rescued him from a mountain lion when he was playing outside his home in Colorado.

The five-year-old, who was attacked on Friday, is in fair condition with injuries to his face, head and neck, and has been transferred to a hospital in Denver.

The boy's mother said to police that he had been playing in front of their home in Pitkin County with his older brother when she heard screaming and ran outside to find a mountain lion on him, police said.

She explained to police that she was able to pull the boy away from the animal, and the boy's father called emergency services to tell them he was driving his son to hospital.

His mother sustained minor injuries to her hand and legs and was "treated and released in good condition", according to Jenny Dyche, spokeswoman for Aspen Valley Hospital.

A mountain lion was found near where the attack took place, and authorities put the animal down.

They will examine the deceased lion and attempt to find a second lion reported to be in the area.
