A family had their dog stolen, placed on Gumtree and sold 24 hours later.
Prince the Bull Mastiff was swiped from his family's back garden before being placed online for sale.
The three-year-old pooch was sold on three times to different bidders before his owners forked out £200 to have him returned and an arrest was made.
Charlotte Padgett, 23, from Bridlington, East Yorkshire, spent hours searching for Prince - a present for her daughter - before she came across the online auction.
Prince had exchanged hands three times within 24 hours before police were called to an address in Humberside - 70 miles from Ms Padgett's home - in relation to a dispute about the ownership of a dog.
A 36-year-old woman was arrested and later released on bail.
Kristy Cropper, Ms Padgett's mother, described the scenario as an "utter nightmare".
"I just couldn't believe it - it was as if the thief had been planning to take the dog for a while - because it had already been listed on the morning before he was taken", Ms Cropper said.
