A man kept his grandmother's corpse wrapped in plastic bags for five months - because he was afraid of losing his home.
Police made the morbid discovery when they went to check on 85-year-old Erika Kraus-Breslin at her home on 65th Street in Queens, New York.
Officers say Christopher Fuhrer told officers he covered the 85-year-old with plastic bags as the smell worsened.
They say Fuhrer tried to mask the smell with air fresheners and a fan in the upstairs bedroom of his grandmother's home.
Fuhrer, 30, was arrested on improper burial and other charges.
The grandmother's daughter said she had not heard from her mother in some time and asked police to do a wellness check.
When officers arrived at the home, they were met by the grandson who took them to a bedroom.
A post-mortem will be carried out to determine how Ms Kraus-Breslin died.
