A pedestrian walking along a motorway was killed in a collision involving an Iceland supermarket van.

The pedestrian was knocked down just before 3am on Tuesday as he walked along the M4 near Reading, Berkshire.

Police are now attempting to establish why the person was on the motorway when he was hit between junctions 10 and 11.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "Sadly, the pedestrian died at the scene.

"The lorry driver is uninjured but is believed to have suffered from shock".

Supermarket chain Iceland confirmed one of its drivers and vans had been involved in the collision.

"We can confirm that an Iceland vehicle was involved in an incident on the M4 in the early hours of this morning which led to a fatality", a spokesperson said,

"Our thoughts are naturally with the family of the deceased at this very sad time and also with our driver".

Police are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

The road was closed for several hours while emergency services and the highways authority dealt with the incident.
