England interim manager Gareth Southgate believes the Football Association and him will need time to reflect following the game with Spain.

Southgate will be taking charge of his final match as the temporary manager, leaving the FA with a decision to make.

The former Middlesbrough boss wants his employer to come to a quick conclusion so he can move forward.

I think it's right for everybody to reflect.

It will be important for me to know what I'm doing after the middle of November.

We've got a European Under-21 Championship to prepare for and the seniors have got their next round of qualifiers [in March].

Of course everybody is going to want to know, I guess, by the end of November, middle of December, where everything is heading so we can decide who is responsible for which parts of the organisation's work.

Wayne Rooney won't start against Spain on Tuesday night, Southgate confirmed.

Jordan Henderson will captain the team in the friendly to be played a Wembley.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart won't be rested either for the final game of Southgate's spell as caretaker.

Both Rooney and Ryan Bertrand missed training on Monday, leaving them as doubts for the game.

Both are being assessed, they had minor issues this morning, so we'll have a look at them as the day goes on.

They weren't ready to train today so they must be a doubt, but we'll have to look later.

I wouldn't start Wayne in this game anyway, so we'll decide which route to go.
