Birmingham has been selected as the preferred UK candidate city for a potential bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Commonwealth Federation judges picked Birmingham ahead of rival city Liverpool to become the host bid.

If the bid passes a final stage of assessment then a formal bid will be submitted to the Commonwealth Games Federation in the coming weeks.

The UK has fantastic expertise in hosting the biggest events in sport, as recently showcased at the London 2017 World Para Athletics and IAAF World Championships, and if we are to bid and are selected to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022 I have no doubt that Birmingham would host an excellent sporting spectacle.

The competition to host the Games was opened up after the event was stripped from Durban in South Africa earlier this year.

Other countries who could put forward cities to host the event include Australia, Canada and Malaysia.
