Roads sink after lack of rain

The lack of moisture has caused the soil to shrink, leading to large cracks in the road surfaces.

Norfolk County Council, Suffolk County Council, Peterborough City Council and Lincolnshire County Council are among a group of local authorities in our region, submitting a joint multi-million pound bid to the Department for Transport, to repair the roads.

Each authority is in the process of identifying how many roads are affected. 58 routes in Peterborough alone have been found to have significant drought damage.

A number of solutions to the problem are being considered. These include embedding a steel mesh under the surface of the road to ensure the levels of the road will not drop in the future.

The joint bid is due to be submitted by the end of March.
