Roger and Lavinia Hamer from Harwich were handed a shrivelled box from a badly damaged dressing table by builders who are now working on site. Inside was Lavinia’s ruby encrusted engagement ring.
Their home was one of five destroyed in a fire in December last year.
When they married 40 years ago they couldn’t afford an expensive ring, so Roger had the ring specially commissioned in 2009 for their ruby wedding anniversary.
The couple say they are over the moon that builders managed to find the ring amongst the ruins, two months on.
