Essex Man on trial accused of shooting ex partner and child

A man will stand trial today accused of shooting dead his former partner and their two-year-old daughter.

David Oakes, 51, denies murdering Christine Chambers, 38, and Shania Chambers during a custody dispute.

The pair were found at their home in Bartram Avenue, Braintree, Essex, on June 6 last year, after another child jumped from a window to raise the alarm.

Oakes, of Canney Road, Steeple, Essex, was treated in hospital for a gunshot injury following the incident and previously appeared at the Old Bailey via videolink with visible scarring to the left side of his face.

He is currently in custody and his trial at Chelmsford Crown Court is set to start today.
