Conservative overall majority: 10

Labour made three gains at the expense of the Conservatives cutting the Tory majority form 16 to 10.

In the past, Basildon has been a politically volatile council swinging from Labour to Conservative depending on the national mood.

Labour lost the re-drawn parliamentary seat of South Basildon and East Thurrock to the Conservatives in the 2010 General Election.
