David Oakes has been found guilty of the murder of Christine Chambers and their daughter Shania.

The jury of seven men and five women were sent to consider their verdicts at 10.20am on Thursday, but still hadn't reached a decision by the end of the afternoon. They resumed their deliberations at 10am today and announced their verdict just before lunch.

The trial at Chelmsford Crown Court started on the 18th April. Over the last few weeks the jury has heard from many witnesses about what happend on June 6th 2011. It was alleged that David Oakes, 50, went to Christine Chambers' house in Braintree where he subjected her to "degrading assaults" before shooting her and their toddler daughter Shania.

Oakes, of Canney Road, Steeple, Essex had denied two counts of murder. He told the court that it was Miss Chambers who shot Shania, and was then fatally wounded herself after she tried to attack him.
