Colchester United have signed former Brentford midfielder Marcus Bean on a free transfer.

The 28 year old becomes the U's first summer capture after signing a three year contract.

Bean was released by Brentford at the end of last season. He'd spent four years at Griffin Park, making more than 160 appearances.

The former Queens Park Rangers trainee was part of the Bees' League Two promotion winning side of 2009 and also helped Blackpool win promotion to the Championship two years earlier.

Bean's arrival at Colchester is a double boost for manager John Ward. Twenty-four hours earlier, John-Joe O'Toole committed his immediate future at the Weston Homes Community Stadium by signing a new two year contract.
